Question:
Would Tiger Woods be such a big deal if he weren't half black?

I remember when Tom Watson was totally dominant for 5-6 years, he was famous in golf circles, but not a tenth of the fame Tiger has. Does being black and good skyrocket you to fame in sports?

Yes! Tiger being black makes him an instant unique asset. If he were white, he'd be like every other golfer on the PGA Tour. Since he's black he's one of a kind! That makes him much more marketable.

I think if he was white, he'd be earning $50 million less per year. Being black in a white sport catapults you to the top, IMO. Lewis Hamilton is the first black driver in F1 and I think there is all kinds of bias favoring him.

Good question. I think being good rockets you to fame. Are Iverson and Vick (pre-pit bull) MORE popular because they're black? Would Bird have been as popular if HE was black? The media decides who is famous at the start, but that person better have game to stay there in a positive way.

Regarding Tiger, race probably was the big deal for a few years (96-98), but after he started demolishing everyone else (1999-present), that mostly went away. Remember Augusta rebuilt the whole place just to try to slow HIM down. Tiger's talented, motivated, well-spoken, and is a solid guy. He never embarasses himself or his profession. These days his race isn't even a factor with the majority of golf fans. We just want him to have SOMEONE to really challenge him. Jack went up against Palmer, Player, Trevino, Watson. Even Casper, Miller, and Irwin were on the level of Singh, Mickleson, Els, Goosen. Faldo and Seve' should be glad they started after Jack and before Eldrick.

Tiger Woods has dominated at every level, and is on pace to break almost every record in professional golf. By the time he's finished, he will likely be rated as one of, if not the single greatest athlete of all time.

Every once in awhile his race will get thrown in, but he's a big deal because of his ability and all he's accomplished. Tom Watson never had nearly the success or ability of Tiger Woods. If Tiger was a mediocre player with a handful of wins and he got the same amount of attention you may have a point, but considering what he's done that's a pretty racist assumption.

Being 1/2 black doesn't have ANYTHING to do with popularity. The guy is just a legend. Tom Watson was famous but Tiger is more because he is better. Tiger Woods has one 60 tournaments and he is only 31 years old!!!

If anyone won that many tournaments, with that much domination over the time period Tiger has.... I believe you'd hear just as much about him. One thing about Tiger, you ever hear of him being arrested? or even pulled over, or questioned by police. No matter what Tiger's race, he is an outstanding role model in any format.

p.s. I'm caucasian, so don't think for a second that I've written these things due to my race. GO Tiger Woods, also, I never even watch golf.........

well since for the longest time golf was (and to an extent still is) primarily a white mans sport, the fact that a man who is half black can come in and dominate the field for such a long period of time certainly helps.

if he was a white boy and this good (i.e on pace to break jacks record of 18 majors) he would still be big, but not as big. part of tigers sucess is his charisma, you find yourself liking the guy, he has brought golf really back into the mainstream because of his sucesses. most people who wouldnt watch golf on tv do so when tiger is playing

so i short i guess the answer to your question is no he wouldnt be such a big deal if he werent black, but he would still be pretty big

Tiger Woods gets his fame through his accomplishments. And FYI he is one quarter black and one half ASIAN. I believe his father was half black and half american indian, but I'm pretty sure his mother is 100% Asian. You do the math. I know many think of Tiger as a black golfer dominating the sport. But, as an Asian American, I like to point out that actually, an Asian is dominating PGA golf. We don't really need to go into the LPGA to support this point do we? ;D

It occurred the day after the Enquirer accused him of snoozing around on his spouse. And he won't confer with the police that are investigating it. He stated his spouse acted courageously in rescuing him from the automobile by using utilising a golf club to interrupt open the window and drag him out over glass while she might have the two opened the door and have been given him out if it replaced into unlocked or used the spare keys to get him out. And this is protocol to attend until the paramedics get there in case he replaced into injured, shifting somebody while they are injured can create extra harm. (My Dad broke his leg whilst attempting on some curler skates, the individuals who worked interior the shop made it worse by using attempting to take off the skate.) interior the previous Tiger Woods has been very quiet and hasn't quite had any scandals. despite he and his spouse say to the police will finally be released to the time-honored public under the liberty of archives Act and if he/they misinform the police they might get charged with hindering a police learn.

Part of the answer is there is more coverage of golf on TV now. Perhaps Tiger is the reason for that. More people are playing golf now so there is a bigger audience and people want to see who is winning, and it's Tiger.

To be honest, since I am female, I would rather watch women play so I can compare my game to theirs.

He has dominated the game more than any other player in history. Yes, Tom Watson was great but don't tell us that he dominated more than Tiger has. He's a big deal because all he does is win!

Half of Tiger Woods would be a big deal, no matter what color he was, the guy is the greatest golfer of them all. Bobby Fischer in chess, Michael Jordan in basketball, Wayne Gretszky in hocky and Woods in Golf. One of a kind, and race has nothing to do with it.

dont matter if he is black, white, yellow, green, tangerine or whatever...he is THE BIG DEAL , if you have seen him play, seen him on the third round somewhere on page 1 of the leaderboard, then you`d probably understand why most scribes has annointed as one of the greatest if not the greatest to have ever played the game...

and no, i am not even a big Tiger Woods fan, i think he is too snotty...

i just appreciate good golf...

Tiger has the 'it' factor and no matter what color(s) you are, you are born with it or without it.
