Actually, after reading your question I can tell the you have the makings of a fine golfer. An upright swing is preceded by a swing disconnect. In most circumstances the right elbow sits "high" and the right hand is not in proper position. This will throw your swing off plane, resulting in a steep approach to the ball. In order to use this type of swing, timing has to be somewhat perfect.
The "feel" that you speak of could actually help you help yourself. If you already know what the proper swing is suppose to be, you just have to re-train yourself. The point is, as you are engaging in the proper swing, tell yourself that "this swing is what I want", and when you make the upright swing tell yourself "this doesn't feel right".
A feeling then becomes instinct. That's where you want to be. The angle, if too steep, limits your impact area. So instead of a short & chunky divot, you want a longer & shallower divot.
So in summary, if you want to increase your chances of striking the golf ball, you have to lessen your swing plane angle. Work on re-training the swing thought so that the feeling of the correct swing is then instinctive. Your swing should then be more across the chest, and not so much under your neck. Hopefully this helps.
