People always tell me that my golf swing is very upright and that I should really try to "flatten" it out. I've tried to work on this at the driving range but it just does not feel comfortable at all and i can barely make contact with the ball. I am far from a goof golfer(I generally shoot in the high 90's), but I'm just curious if having this type of swing plane will hurt my golf game and do i need to switch to a flatter swing plane? thanks

I've given hundreds, maybe thousands of golf lessons. If you are shooting high 90's I promise you have fundamentals to improve far ahead of swing plane. I never talk swing plane in a golf lesson. (I may fix swing plane thru another avenue. ) Don't listen to all your buddies who are likely not knowledgable to help you. Get a lesson with a good instructor. He will likely focus on more core fundamentals. I call it chapter 1 stuff. grip, alignment, stance, ball position, posture. etc. I have rarely given a lesson to a student who had all their chapter 1 stuff in place but were still struggling with their game. Good luck.

Actually, after reading your question I can tell the you have the makings of a fine golfer. An upright swing is preceded by a swing disconnect. In most circumstances the right elbow sits "high" and the right hand is not in proper position. This will throw your swing off plane, resulting in a steep approach to the ball. In order to use this type of swing, timing has to be somewhat perfect.

The "feel" that you speak of could actually help you help yourself. If you already know what the proper swing is suppose to be, you just have to re-train yourself. The point is, as you are engaging in the proper swing, tell yourself that "this swing is what I want", and when you make the upright swing tell yourself "this doesn't feel right".

A feeling then becomes instinct. That's where you want to be. The angle, if too steep, limits your impact area. So instead of a short & chunky divot, you want a longer & shallower divot.

So in summary, if you want to increase your chances of striking the golf ball, you have to lessen your swing plane angle. Work on re-training the swing thought so that the feeling of the correct swing is then instinctive. Your swing should then be more across the chest, and not so much under your neck. Hopefully this helps.

Be careful of well meaning but uninformed golf instruction. Jack Nicklaus played pretty well with an upright swing plane.

What people may mean but don't know how to express is that you pick the club up too steeply with your hands and arms and should strive to turn your upper body more, producing more of a rounded looking swing. Think of a circle that is your height and sits straight up and down on the ground in front of you. Now tilt the circle so that the top is just above your right shoulder. That circle is the path the club head should follow.

This a uncomplicated, although somewhat confusing theory.that's the plane upon which the club would desire to ideally shuttle in the time of the swing. It for sure can't be horizontal (like a playground roundabout) or vertical (as a pendulum swing) yet is an vulnerable plane, someplace between the two.It grow to be visualised in Ben Hogan´s e book of the mid-Nineteen Fifties "the favourite fundamentals" as being like a extensive sheet of plate glass with a hollow in it, wherein the participant´s head ought to protrude thereby allowing the plate-glass to sit down down back on the participant´s shoulders whilst the backside edge of the glass plate lay alongside the ball-objective line.this theory ,in spite of the shown fact that, carry approximately the misguided perception that the shoulders would additionally rotate in this comparable plane whilst if certainty be told they must rotate on a plenty flatter plane, concerning the attitude of the backbone, on the handle place. The somewhat present day version is; that the suited plane that the club would desire to swing on, would desire to be, an identical because of the fact the attitude of the club shaft interior the handle place, till the club shaft reaches a horizontal place, basically below waist top,the place the club shaft would desire to be additionally be parellel to the ball-objective line and then, because of the fact the club keeps upwards, the attitude of the club shaft would desire to be above and parallel to the unique attitude of the handle place. on the optimum factor of the backswing, that's then the prolonged left arm(for a real-surpassed golfer) that must be parallel to, and above, the prolonged unique club shaft attitude. This then reverses interior the downswing and is symetrical interior the stick to-by using.
