As long as it is "known or virtually certain" that the ball went in the casual water, you would get a free drop. If you can't find the ball, you can substitute a ball. There is no penalty.

But there has to be very strong evidence that the ball is in the casual water. Having a lot of witnesses who saw the ball go into the casual water is probably all the evidence you would need.

Rule 25-2c.

Edit: You didn't say it was in a bunker. That changes things a little!

If the ball was in a bunker, then the player would have to drop in the bunker also. Even if the bunker was totally full of water, he would have to drop in the bunker at the spot where the water was lowest.

He can drop outside the bunker, but there would be a one stroke penalty. Rule 25-1b.

In either case, he can still substitute a ball if he can't find the original ball.

Ball in casual water is played outside the casual water with no penalty. If the ball is bunkered, the player must play the ball from the bunker, from the driest spot and it has to be dropped. It still may sink into the wet sand but that comes under the heading " too bad ". If he elects to play it from behind the bunker he must add a penalty stroke.

For what it's worth. I concur with John. As long as it is virtually certain....just like the rule states.

My response was more out of curiosity....what the heck happened on the course that caused a casual water condition that could swallow a ball?

Very curious.
