Golf clubs have two major features that directly influence how far and how high the ball will go when hit correctly with each club. What you are looking at in the illustration is a full set of golf clubs, including the woods and the irons. Beginning on the left are the wood clubs (larger heads) numbered from 1 wood, 3 wood, 5 wood and 7 wood. Progressing the irons (smaller heads), starting from the left, are the 3 iron, 4 iron, 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, 10 iron, and 11 iron (also known as the sand wedge). Note that there is a difference in length of one-half inch between each club in the set.
Remember from your high school physiccs class that the longer lever, the greater the force? It's OK if you do not remember, because I am reminding you now. With a longer club, applying the same amount of power, you will be able to generate more club head speed. The result will be a longer shot. Going back to high school physics again, the loft of the club face will determine the angle at which the ball bounces off the club face. Picture the extension of the magnet on the club face as representing the initial flight of the ball.

Those are terrible clubs, and you can't play competitively with only 5 clubs. If you are going to consistently practice between now and then, go to a used golf store like Play it Again Sports and pick out a putter, sand wedge, 5 iron, and 3 or 5 wood. Next fall, see if you can get a deal on say all the odd numbered irons if you don't want a full set, but by then you may change your mind. If you're not going to practice at all between now and then just wait until next year and see what you can find, but if you don't want to play with crap, don't buy clubs from Target, Walmart, KMart, etc. Buy used clubs, or buy clubs from actual golf stores.

I'm with the others, good quality clubs can come after you have developed a good swing. I'm not familiar with Ben Ross clubsbut if they fit your needs and price range, then go for it.

i've always seen and believed that it is not the clubs that make the golfer, but their skills. golf is such a psychological and physical sport that you can play with average equipment, and if your skills are stellar, you will beat most of the players with top-notch gear.

Lets see they have all the attributes that clubs should have (grip, shaft, head) they should be fine, as D.K says its the player not the clubs....oh and they will also match your nail polish.
