Yes, fairway woods are just a subclassification of the general term woods.
Woods are the clubs used to hit the ball the furthest distance. The driver, or 1 wood, is generally only used to hit the ball off of the tee, as it has the least amount of loft. After the driver is the general class of fairway woods, which can be a 2 wood, three wood, four wood, five wood, on up, with each number having a higher loft and therefore causing the ball to fly higher and a shorter distance. The move towards clubs which are easier to hit has caused some manufacturers to eliminate the 2-3-4-5-6 irons and replace them with higher lofted woods. Again, the higher lofted woods are fairway woods.

No because a Driver falls under the Wood category, and a driver is different than a fariway wood.

Ok Ivor has no clue. Fairway woods and woods are synonymous. In todays marketplace they are all metal....but the name persists. Irons are just that the Irons
